The Saint Louis Science Center is seeking a seasoned finance professional to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for management of all fiscal operations, budgets and business procedures. Responsible, in conjunction with the rest of the Executive Leadership Team, for facilitating the development and successful execution of the strategic plan, including operational goals, initiatives and policies. The CFO oversees all financial and administrative functions, including budgeting, accounting, treasury, project and grant accounting, internal controls, audits, risk management, contract review, and retirement plans. Provides the leadership to ensure financial strength and operating efficiency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide day-to-day leadership and management of Finance, Information Technology and Staff Relations/HR functions. Motivate, lead and mentor management team to foster a success-oriented, accountable environment.
Serve as Staff Liaison to the Board of Commissioners through designated committees, including Finance Committee, Audit Committee, and Investment Committee.
Responsible for the preparation of the annual audited financial statements. Work directly with independent certified public accountants to ensure compliance with AICPA standards.
Work directly with attorneys or consultants to ensure compliance with all related laws and the financial integrity of all applicable contracts and commitments.
Responsible for the measurement and effectiveness of all internal processes. Collaborate with management team to develop and implement plans to improve operational infrastructure and processes; develop personnel and staffing models to effectively and efficiently accomplish the SLSC mission.
Supervise the preparation of the annual operating and capital budget. Prepare short-term and long-term financial goals and recommend to the Board for approval.
Review monthly financial reports and budget variances to assure the maintenance of fiscal responsibility by each department. Adjust funding as needed to meet budget and cash flow goals.
Work directly with financial institutions to establish lines of credit and invest funds as needed. Maintain banking and investment relationships and contacts. Oversee financing for major new projects, including campaign pledges and payments, tax-exempt bonds and existing/new credit agreements.
Responsible for overall risk management and maintenance of adequate insurance coverages. Serve as liaison with broker and insurance companies and oversee claims processing.
Provide guidance and resources for HR teams to further recruitment efforts, compensation and benefits, performance management, policy development and professional development. Drive a culture of quality and coordinate and administer employee benefit plans in conjunction with Staff Relations personnel.
Assure that information systems meet ongoing operational needs and support future developments. Provide planning and resources to satisfy expanding needs of the institution. Oversee IT security, PCI compliance and operating system controls.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required, Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred, with strong non-profit finance experience; minimum 12 - 15 years finance experience and background in cash/treasury management; excellent planning and organizational skills, with exceptional attention to detail; ability to use good judgment, tact, and diplomacy; excellent communication skills, written and oral; excellent people skills; ability to motivate and lead a high performance management team.
This position has the usual administrative office requirements – sitting, walking, standing, climbing stairs, attending meetings, lifting or carrying up to 25lbs; will at times require attending external meetings with Board members/committee members, etc.
