Pingree School (www.pingree.org) is a coeducational independent day school enrolling 384 students in grades nine through twelve. Founded in 1960 as a day school for girls, Pingree School became coeducational in 1971. Its beautiful campus is situated on 100 acres of land on Boston’s North Shore. In recent years, there have been significant program and facilities enhancements. The early 2000s saw the expansion of the school’s Library and Commons areas and the founding of the Malcolm Coates Prep@Pingree Program. In 2004, Pingree opened a new Academic Wing with updated classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, and exhibition space. 2014 saw the introduction of a new Arts Wing and Athletics Center. A renovated Dining Commons was completed in 2016, and a turf field was completed in 2018. Under the leadership of Head of School Tim Johnson, now in his tenth year, the school continues to innovate and enhance a positive, strong, and forward-thinking school culture. Pingree is now launching a strategic Framework for the Future that is centered on people, pace, and place. A new Chief Financial Officer will have the opportunity to join a vibrant school community and work closely with a creative, ambitious Head of School and leadership team as they move forward in realizing the school’s next chapter of strategic goals.
Pingree seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join the school’s leadership team. Reporting to the Head of School and working closely with the Board of Trustees, the CFO is responsible for oversight of all aspects of the school’s finances and for advancing the financial sustainability of the school.
The school’s new CFO has a tremendous opportunity to be an integral part of a strong and positive team in a nimble, creative, and strong independent school community. The CFO is responsible for all aspects of finances and oversees the school’s operations and human resources. The CFO manages and supports three additional members of the office: Controller & Director of Financial Aid, Director of Human Resources and Administrative Assistant, while also working closely with the Director of Facilities, Director of Dining Services and members of the Board of Trustees. The CFO plays a key role in the development and execution of financial strategy to support the school’s mission, vision and financial sustainability.
Essential responsibilities include:
Long range strategic and financial planning including acumen with fiscal modeling and data analysis
Preparing the annual operating budget and regular financial statements
Regularly updating the school’s leadership regarding the school’s financial position, including identification of emerging issues
Developing and managing efficient financial systems, reporting, and procedures
Proactively exploring efficiencies to improve the school’s financial position
Communicating effectively and positively with all school constituents
Skills, Qualifications, and Attributes
Pingree’s next CFO will possess highly attuned management skills and the personal skills to work positively and collaboratively with a wide range of individuals in a small and warm community. With an endowment of $15M, the school’s yearly operating budget is approximately $15M, $3.2M of which is awarded in financial assistance each year. The school has met or surpassed enrollment and net revenue goals over the last ten years and carries $6M in favorably financed debt. In 2017-2018 the school reached its annual fund goal of $1.1M.
The next CFO will be a detail-oriented, strategic financial professional with strong interpersonal skills who will enthusiastically embrace the school’s mission and culture and continue to build on a climate of trust and responsiveness. He or she will successfully partner with the school’s leadership, provide day-to-day and long-term financial management, and offer wise and creative strategic financial visioning.

The abilities to think analytically and creatively and to serve as a strategic partner with the Head of School and other school leaders
Integrity, credibility, enthusiasm, passion, a sense of humor and a strong work ethic
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the interest and ability to work collaboratively with others in a team setting
An aptitude for and comfort with technology and implementing and enhancing systems, along with a commitment to positive change management and systems thinking
A MBA, non-profit finance experience, and familiarity with Blackbaud are pluses.
